Gutter, Fascia and Trim Painting

Trim, fascia and gutters frame the whole exterior, and they are often the first surfaces to peel. Nex-Gen Painting refreshes them as a standalone job or alongside a full exterior repaint.

Why trim fails first

Fascia and trim sit at the edges of the house, where water runs off the roof and sun hits at a low angle. Joints open up, caulk shrinks and cracks, and moisture gets behind the paint, which is why trim often peels while the siding still looks sound. Prep starts with scraping loose paint and sanding edges smooth, then checking boards for soft spots or rot that need carpentry before painting. Open joints and gaps around windows are recaulked, bare wood is spot primed, and the finish goes on in a durable exterior enamel. Refreshing trim on its own can extend the time before a full repaint is needed.

Painting gutters and downspouts

Gutters and downspouts are usually aluminum or galvanized steel, and both are smooth surfaces that paint does not grip easily. They are cleaned to remove dirt, oxidation and any factory oils, then lightly scuffed. Galvanized metal needs a primer made for it, or the paint will peel off in sheets within a season or two. Downspouts are usually painted to match the wall they run down so they recede into the house, while gutters often match the fascia or trim. We also check that the gutters are clear and that the paint will not block seams or drainage outlets.

Victorian and Craftsman detail

Older homes in Vallejo and Benicia carry a lot of decorative trim: brackets, corbels, scalloped shingles, window hoods and layered moldings. That detail is a large part of what makes these houses distinctive, and it is slow work to prepare properly. Each piece is scraped and sanded by hand, and multi-color schemes are planned in advance so the right elements are picked out in contrasting colors. Salt air off the Carquinez Strait adds to wear on these elevations, so bare wood is primed carefully and every joint is sealed. On these homes, trim is often where the quality of a paint job is most visible.

FAQs

Questions about gutters & trim.

Something else on your mind? Call or text (707) 397-9661.

Can you paint just the trim without repainting the whole house?

Yes. Trim, fascia and gutters can be painted as a standalone job when the siding is still in good condition. We match the existing color or help you choose a new trim color that works with the body of the house, and the free written estimate lists each surface included.

Can aluminum gutters be painted?

Yes, with the right preparation. Aluminum and galvanized gutters are cleaned to remove oxidation and oils, lightly scuffed, and primed with a product made for metal before the finish coat. Without that primer, paint on gutters tends to peel. Downspouts are treated the same way.

What if my fascia boards are rotted?

Paint will not hold on soft or rotted wood, so damaged boards need to be repaired or replaced before painting. We look for rot during the estimate, point out the affected sections and explain what needs to happen first, so the new paint goes onto sound material.
