Color Consultation

Choosing paint colors from small chips is hard, and bright North Bay light makes it harder. Nex-Gen Painting helps you test colors on your own walls, in your own light, before any painting begins.

Why colors look different on your walls

A chip under store lighting tells you very little about how a color will look on a west-facing wall in a Napa afternoon. Strong North Bay sun washes out pale colors and warms neutrals, while north-facing rooms pull colors cooler and darker. Surrounding finishes such as floors, countertops, stone and wood trim also shift how a color reads. For that reason, we test colors with large samples on the actual walls, viewed at different times of day. Seeing two or three candidates side by side in place usually settles a decision that weeks of looking at chips could not.

Exterior color schemes

Exterior colors stay up for years, so they deserve more care than a single interior room. A scheme usually covers the body, the trim, and one accent for doors or shutters, and it has to work with what is not changing, such as roofing, stone, brick and landscaping. In Napa and Sonoma, stucco homes often suit warm earth tones, while Victorian homes in Vallejo and Benicia can carry richer multi-color schemes that pick out their trim detail. Intense sun on south and west walls fades darker colors faster, which is part of the conversation. If your neighborhood has an HOA, we check the approved palette first.

What you leave with

The consultation ends with a written color schedule that lists each surface, the color name and code, and the sheen. That document goes into your estimate and stays with you, which makes future touch-ups and repaints simple. If you are painting the house in stages over time, a consistent schedule keeps rooms from looking pieced together. The consultation can be a standalone visit or part of an interior, exterior or cabinet project with Nex-Gen. Either way, the aim is a confident choice before any paint is bought, so there are no surprises once the first wall is finished.

FAQs

Questions about color consultation.

Something else on your mind? Call or text (707) 397-9661.

Do I have to hire Nex-Gen to paint if I book a color consultation?

No. A consultation can be booked on its own, and the written color schedule is yours to use however you choose. It also pairs naturally with an interior, exterior or cabinet project if you would like one team to carry the plan through. Call (707) 397-9661 to talk through what you need.

How many colors should I test?

Two or three candidates per space is usually enough. More than that tends to make the choice harder rather than easier. We put large samples on the walls in different spots, so you can compare them in morning and afternoon light before deciding.

Can you match a color from another surface?

Yes. We can match a color from an existing painted surface, a fabric or a sample you bring, and record the formula on your color schedule. For faded exterior paint, we will talk through whether to match the faded color or the original, since the two can look quite different side by side.
