Door and Gate Painting

Front doors, garage doors and gates are the parts of a house people touch and notice first, and they take a lot of weather. Nex-Gen Painting refinishes wood, metal and fiberglass doors and gates with prep and coatings suited to each material.

Entry doors

A front door is a small surface with a lot of detail: raised panels, glass lites, weatherstripping and hardware. Where possible, hardware comes off and the door is cleaned, sanded and primed so the finish lies flat across the panels without runs in the corners. Wood doors with peeling or weathered finish are sanded back to sound material, while fiberglass and steel doors need a primer made for those surfaces. On south and west facing entries, North Bay sun breaks down dark colors faster, so we can talk through color and product choices that hold up to that exposure. The work is timed so your home stays secure overnight.

Garage doors

Garage doors are often the largest single painted surface on the front of a house, so a faded or peeling one affects the whole elevation. Steel garage doors are washed, checked for rust and scuffed so the new coat bonds, then painted with an exterior enamel that tolerates expansion in summer heat. Wood carriage-style doors need the same care as wood siding: loose paint scraped, bare wood primed and the bottom edge sealed against moisture. We avoid painting a door while it sits in direct afternoon sun, and we leave it in a position that will not mark the fresh finish while it cures.

Wrought iron, metal and wood gates

Gates and iron railings take weather on every side, and on properties near the Vallejo and Benicia waterfront, salt air speeds up rust. The work starts with removing loose rust and flaking paint by wire brushing and sanding, then treating the remaining surface with a rust-inhibiting primer before the finish coat. Ornamental iron has many edges and scrolls, so it is coated carefully to avoid thin spots, which is where rust returns first. Wood gates are cleaned, sanded and painted or sealed to match the fence or trim around them. Hinges and latches are kept free of paint so the gate still swings and closes properly.

FAQs

Questions about doors & gates.

Something else on your mind? Call or text (707) 397-9661.

Can you paint a door without taking it off the hinges?

Often, yes. Many entry doors are painted in place, with hardware removed or masked and the door propped open to dry. Doors with heavy damage or a complex finish may be removed and finished flat. Either way, we plan the timing so your home is secure overnight.

Will a dark front door fade in the sun?

Dark colors absorb more heat and tend to fade and chalk faster on south and west facing doors, which get strong afternoon sun in the North Bay. A quality exterior enamel helps, and we can suggest colors that hold up better in direct exposure if fading is a concern for you.

How do you stop rust coming back on iron gates?

Rust returns where it was not fully removed or where the coating is thin. We remove loose rust and flaking paint, treat the surface with a rust-inhibiting primer, and apply the finish coats with close attention to edges and scrollwork. Near the waterfront, an occasional rinse also helps the finish last.
