Painting for New Construction and Rebuilds

New drywall, raw trim and fresh siding need a different sequence from a repaint, starting with the right primer. Nex-Gen Painting works with builders, contractors and homeowners on new homes, additions and rebuilds across Solano, Napa and Sonoma counties.

Why new surfaces start with primer

New drywall is not a uniform surface. The paper face and the joint compound absorb paint at different rates, and without a proper primer the seams and patches show through the finish as dull or shiny bands, an effect called flashing. Fresh drywall gets a dedicated drywall primer before any color goes on. New wood trim and doors are primed so the finish lies evenly and the grain stays down. New stucco needs time to cure before it is painted, and fiber cement siding, even when factory primed, still needs its cut ends sealed. Getting the base right is what keeps the finish coats looking even for years.

Fitting into the build schedule

On a new build, painting sits between drywall finishing and the trades that follow, including flooring, cabinets, fixtures and final electrical. We work from the builder's schedule and plan the sequence with the site lead, which often means spraying ceilings and walls before flooring goes in, then returning to finish trim and doors and to touch up after the other trades are done. Clear communication about dates matters more than speed, because a painter who arrives early or late holds up everyone else on site. Nex-Gen can also handle the exterior on the same project, so one team covers the whole house inside and out.

Rebuilds and additions in the North Bay

Much of the housing in parts of Santa Rosa has been rebuilt since the 2017 fires, and owners managing a rebuild often juggle many trades at once. Painting is one of the last steps before move-in, and it is easy for it to get squeezed. We can work directly with the homeowner or through the general contractor, whichever suits the project. Additions and ADUs bring a different challenge: matching the color and sheen of the existing house so the new section does not stand out. We can sample existing surfaces and match them before the final coats, and point out where an adjoining wall may need repainting too.

FAQs

Questions about new construction.

Something else on your mind? Call or text (707) 397-9661.

Do you work directly for homeowners or only builders?

Both. We work with general contractors on their schedules, and with homeowners who are managing their own build or rebuild. Either way, you get a free written estimate that lists the surfaces, products and number of coats, so it is easy to compare and to fit into the overall budget.

Should new drywall be primed before painting?

Yes. New drywall and joint compound absorb paint unevenly, so skipping primer usually leaves the seams visible through the finish. A dedicated drywall primer seals the surface and evens out absorption, so the finish coats look uniform and cover in fewer passes.

Can you match the paint on my existing house for an addition?

In most cases, yes. We can take a sample from an existing surface to match the color, and use the same sheen so the addition blends in. Older paint that has faded in the sun may mean the adjoining wall should be repainted as well, which we will point out in the estimate.
